As we get to the end of a year of oddities, let's dust off some old traditions, bend a few, and make some new ones. From enjoying the simple pleasures of time spent together as a family to finding new ways of staying connected with friends and the extended family, there sure are ways to make the most of this unusual Christmas of 2020.

If you are looking for some inspiration, here are some fun, socially distanced activities we have put down on our personal lists.

Escape games

Escape games are always a lot of fun. The online versions like The Great ElfEscape are just about the next best thing. You can rope in friends and family from across the globe, work as a team and crack codes to escape a virtual room you are all locked in.

Now, if you'd like to do a home-version, you can try that too. Lock away a cake or chocolates with a number lock, plant some clues around your class/ home, and get the children to crack the number lock open. ActivityMom and the Teachsundayschool have some great ideas.

Virtual Secret Santa

If everything can go virtual, why not secret Santa? Just get the kids to pick a  Secret Santa, deliver the presents online, do a Secret Santa Zoom party and have everyone open their gifts together. And don't forget the lovely local stores and small businesses when shopping for gifts!

Good old card-making

If you haven't done it already, get the children to make their own Christmas cards and send them off on snail mail with a handwritten message and any personalisation they can think of. You could also send a beautiful little wish with a gift card to those in our community who could do with a warm greeting and a thoughtful little treat.

Virtual board games

Bring out the monopolies and scrabbles and play it with another family on zoom or try out their online versions as a group.

Christmas ornament making

Another activity you can do as a group on zoom. Make some popcorn tinsel or make a commemorative Christmas ornament to mark this year, while chatting away with friends and diving into some freshly baked cookies.

Drive-in Christmas movies

This is one of the perfect socially distant ways of enjoying a Christmas movie with friends. The list has a great array of drive-in movies and events across the UK.

Christmas light trails

Many of us tried socially distant Halloween trails with great success, this year. The Christmas light trails are another must-try family activity this Christmas. Flashpackingfamily has a comprehensive list of Christmas light trails across the UK.

There indeed are so many ways to add some magic to this Christmas despite not having the usual big holiday gathering!
